Tanzania’s literary scene celebrated a triumphant moment as members of Writers Space Africa (Tanzania Chapter) showcased their talent at the prestigious 2nd Mwalimu Nyerere National Creative Writing Awards, held in Dar es Salaam on April 13, 2024. Organized by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (MoEST) in collaboration with the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE), the awards honoured outstanding contributions in three categories: novel, poetry, and children’s literature. With each category recognising 10 winners, a total of 30 laureates were celebrated, among them, six remarkable members from WSA-Tanzania.

In the novel category, Lubacha Deus secured the 7th Prize out of 38 submissions, showcasing the fine tooth comb and richness of Tanzanian storytelling. Meanwhile, the Children’s Literature category saw a remarkable sweep by the WSA-Tanzania memebers with Nahida Esmail clinching the 10th Prize, followed by Ally Baharoon (8th Prize), Halima Juma Adam (7th Prize), Corona Cermak (5th Prize), and Christina Habakuki Lwendo (4th Prize), out of 50 submissions.
Speaking on the significance of the award, Prof Penina Mlama, director of the awards, emphasised its focus on nurturing Tanzanian talent and promoting the use of the Kiswahili language. Dr Anneth Komba, director of TIE, highlighted the award’s role in fostering a culture of writing and reading, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering growth in the publication sector.

As the award enters its second term, it stands as a beacon of encouragement for aspiring Tanzanian writers, driving the nation’s literary landscape to new heights. This recognition not only celebrates individual achievement but also contributes to the broader goal of enriching cultural heritage through the power of words.
This is another motivation for WSA Tanzania writers who can trust in the power of their creative endeavours.
